X-Men sequels takes the throne from Godzilla at box office

X-Men: Days of Future Past, the latest edition of the X-Men movies in the Marvel Comics series about mutants with super powers has had a massive opening at the United States and Canadian box office with weekend sales of $90.7 million, the figures have easily surpassed its 2011 predecessor.rs_560x415-140324105153-560.7x-men-poster.ls.32414

The latest X-Men movie has also taken the top spot from Godzilla, a remake of the 1950s monster film. Godzilla’s earnings have been reported to $31.4 million and has now taken the second spot with “Blended,” a Warner Bros. Romantic comedy opening third with $14.2 million weekend earnings at the box office.

The studios have often placed much hopes on the sequels to outperform the previous films. X-Men: Days of Future Past, which stars Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart, is the second of a new trilogy that Fox is producing. The Six previous films released by the studious have collected global earnings of $2.4 billion since 2000.

The total box office earnings for the film have been reported to be $90.6 million on the domestic front. The movie has done tremendously well overseas as well as the total global earnings for the weekend have been estimated to be $262 million. Fox said in a statement the film had the highest-grossing opening weekend globally of the “X-Men” franchise.

After the release the film has generated massive social media buzz. The recent reports of the number of “Likes” for the movie on the social media website Facebook as been announced to be more than 11 million. The film also has an average of 20,000 tweets per day with positive to negative ration of 18:1.
